Seiji Hiroe authored and illustrated The Cowboy Fisherman (Self-published 2010), a story about his wife's grandfather who was a Japanese fisherman during the Great Depression. He originally wrote it as a family tale for his grandchildren, but soon saw its value as an important historical story for both Japanese and Canadian peoples-it is written in Japanese and English. Hiroe was nominated for the Christie Harris Illustrated Children's Literature Prize in 2011.
