Born in Brandon, Manitoba on October 24, 1963, Deanna Reder is a Cree-Métis professor of English and the Chair of Indigenous Studies at Simon Fraser University (2017-2022) as well as past Director of the Masters of Arts for Teachers of English (MATE) program (2016-18). In 2018, she was inducted into the College of New Scholars, Artist, & Scientists in the Royal Society of Canada. Reder wrote "Sacred Stories in Comic Book Form: A Cree Reading of Darkness Calls," found in Troubling Tricksters: Revisioning Critical Conversations (Wilfrid Laurier University Press 2010). She also wrote "Writing Autobiographically: A Neglected Indigenous Intellectual Tradition," found in Across Cultures/Across Borders: Canadian Aboriginal and Native American Literatures (Broadview Press 2010). She is a founding member of the Indigenous Literary Studies Association (ILSA) and helped found the Indigenous Editors Association. In 2021, she was co-chair, with Drs. Sophie McCall and Sarah Henzi, of the Indigenous Voices Awards. She also is the Series Editor for the Indigenous Studies Series at Wilfrid Laurier University Press.
