Smyth self-published one of the province's earliest local histories, mainly pertaining to the Kootenay mining boom of the 1880s and 1890s. Smyth moved from Spokane to Slocan City in 1896 and worked in the office of the Slocan City News. Two years later he moved to Moyie. He moved to Cranbrook in 1911 and joined the staff of the Cranbrook Courier.
