Courtenay resident Florence Kaefer began her teaching career at the United Church Indian Residential School in Norway House, Manitoba during the 1950s. One of her pupils was Edward Gamblin. Gamblin became a musician, writing and performing songs about abuse he suffered at the school. Back to the Red Road is their book about Kaefer's apology and the creation of a personal reconciliation.
