David J. Spalding lives on Pender Island. He is a different author from David A.E. Spalding who also lives on Pender Island. His family history of life on South Pender is Put that Damned Old Mattock Away (2013, printed in Victoria by Printorium).

"Arthur Spalding left England in 1886 and came out to the west coast of British Columbia where he purchased a large parcel of land in the valley on South Pender Island. In 1889 he married Lilias Mackay of Victoria. This story is about the lives of Arthur and Lilias and their four children as they established their valley farm and created their remarkable island home. Arthur's diaries and small sketches have played an important role in the development of this story." (From back jacket).
