Martha Attema was born in Friesland (The Netherlands), and moved to Canada in 1981 with her husband and three children. In 1987 she began teaching kindergarten and grades one and two. She started writing stories in English in 1987, drawing her ideas from the history, folk tales and legends of her native Friesland. She now lives in Corbeil, Ontario.
