There are two Robert Batemans associated with books and British Columbia. The best-known is the prolific artist, Robert Bateman [shown at right], who partially resides on Salt Spring Island. His numerous books include "Robert Bateman Natural Worlds" with text by Rich Archbold, "The Art of Robert Bateman" and "Robert Bateman: An Artist in Nature". In 2009 he was honoured with a one-man show at one of the galleries at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. His autobiography, Life Sketches, appeared at age 85. The Robert Bateman Centre is located at 470 Belleville Street in Victoria.

The other Robert Bateman has numerous academic merits including a Ph.D. in educational administration and a post-graduate certificate of education from the University of London. He also has a B.A. (Hons.) in psychology from the University of Sheffield, U.K. and a degree of Doctor Honoris Causa for his research in distance education from the University of Portugal. He has worked as a consultant in over 30 countries for clients such as State Higher Education Commissions and the World Bank. He has been the Director of Distance Education and Technology, Continuing Studies, at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of six books, including his latest, co-edited with Rhonda Epper, "Teaching Faculty How to Use Technology".
