Georgie Hyde Lees, aka Mrs. William Butler Yeats, was much more than an intellectual wet nurse to a genius according to Ann Saddlemyer's in-depth biography, Becoming George: The Life of Mrs. W.B. Yeats (Oxford 2002 $35 0-19-811232-7). Her 'automatic writing' and extrasensory perceptions fueled her husband's work and made their marriage into a literary experiment and partnership. She married Yeats in 1917 when he was 52 and she was 25. Known to her friends as 'George,' she guarded Yeats' literary legacy for 30 years after his death.
Saddlemyer had edited a follow-up volume that was launched in Dublin, W.B. Yeats and George Yeats--The Letters (Oxford University Press, 2011).
Ann Saddlemeyer had taught at the University of Toronto and was past Master of Massey College. A co-founder of Theatre Research in Canada, she was awarded the British Academy's Rose Mary Crawshay Award for Criticism for her Collected Letters of John Millington Synge.
