As the former wife of MP Gordon Gibson Jr., Valerie Gibson was well-connected to Vancouver's influential and wealthy elite, leading to her long stint as a columnist for editor Mac Perry in Vancouver magazine. Her column consisted of a series of catty letters, ostensibly written privately to a friend named Barbie, recounting her views of socialites. Some of her witticisms and observations were published in book format as You Can't Say That: Barbie Darling's Ultimate History of Gossip (Vancouver: Serious Publishing, 1994).
