As a University of Victoria English professor, John Hayman edited Robert Brown and the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition, based on the journal Brown kept while he led the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition in the summer of 1864. It contains one of the earliest written descriptions of a potlatch and spawned a brief gold rush when Brown reported gold at the Sooke and Leech rivers.
