Born in Vancouver in 1964, Fotheringham considers mountain-biking a way of life. Having spent a past decade riding, traveling and freelance writing. He has biked through the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and along Asia's Silk Road. His memoir is called On The Trail of Marco Polo: Along the Silk Road by Bicycle (McArthur & Company, 2000). It details his three-month, 5,000-kilometre bike ride from Beijing to New Delhi.
