Blank is a Winnipeg-born writer who works as a psychiatry resident at UBC. As a physician he has worked in an emergency ward, a James Bay Cree village, an inner-city crisis centre and an HIV clinic. These settings have influenced his poetry in fugue (Vancouver: Broca Publishig, 1994), a collection that 'takes the reader from alley to operating table and back to the beach'.
