Dr. Harvey Thommasen began taping Clayton Mack's stories during morning rounds at the Bella Coola Hospital. These resulted in two bestselling memoirs based on the life of his patient. [See Clayton Mack entry]

Thommasen was born in Youbou, Vancouver Island on October 23, 1957. A Family Physician specializing in Native Health issues, Thommasen worked in Bella Coola from 1988 to 1998 and has done locums throughout rural British Columbia. He is an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Community Health at the University of British Columbia in Prince George; and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He worked in Bella Coola before moving to Houston in B.C.ís Central Interior. He has contributed medical articles on topics including salmon bite infections, Grizzly Bear maulings and rural physician burnout. A genealogy he developed for the Nuxalk people of Bella Coola is now used for their potlatches. Dr Thommasen was recently awarded one of the Commemorative Gold Medals marking the Golden Jubilee of Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2001 he was awarded the Dr David Bachop Gold Medal for Distinguished Medical Service and in 2005 was the co-recipient of the BC Booksellers' Choice Award in Honour of Bill Duthie for Birds of the Raincoast: Habits and Habitat. In 2000 he was admitted to the Order of British Columbia (OBC). Thommmasen makes his home in Bella Coola with his wife and two children.
