Born in Alberta, Dexter has had his own pottery studio since 1972. A respected instructor, he has taught at the Kootenay School of Arts in Nelson, British Columbia; the Vancouver Community College; the Emily Carr College of Art; and the University of Saskatoon. In 1993, Dexter completed raku Donors Wall for the Saanich Penninsula Municipal Hospital in Victoria. With Rona Murray, he has produced The Art of Earth (Sono Nis), a collection of photographs of ceramics from all over the world and from all periods, complemented by verse and prose extracts. Dexter received his diploma in ceramics from the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, after which he continued his studies at the Swedish School of Arts and Crafts. He has exhibited in England, Italy, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and the United States, and has been represented in many international exhibitions. In 1962 he received a silver medal at the International Ceramics Exhibition in Prague, and the Outstanding Stoneware Award in the Canadian Ceramics Biennial. From 1976 to 1978 he was President of the B.C. Craftsmen's Association and Provincial Director of the Canadian Crafts Council. He lives in Victoria, B.C.
