As a UBC professor in 1992, he published two books: Movement and Mimesis: The Idea of Dance in the Sanskritic Tradition and Nartananimaya. He edited Faces of the Feminine in Ancient, Medieval and Modern India (Oxford University Press, 1999). His 1998 study is The world my mother gave me: Asian women's perspectives and perceptions in literature. Vancouver, Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia. In 2001 in wrote Speaking of dance: the Indian critique (New Delhi: Printworld). He edited The Ramayana Culture: Text, Performance and Iconography. 2nd rev. ed. (New Delhi: D. K. Printworld, 2003).
