The provincial museum’s publishing program began in 1942 with G.A. Hardy’s Fifty Edible Plants of British Columbia. Archaeologist Kathryn Bernick, an expert on basketry techniques, looked in detail at the Nuu-chah-nulth people’s handiwork in Basketry & Cordage from Hesquiat Harbour (Royal British Columbia Museum / UBC Press, 1998, $14.95). Her book is an outgrowth of the Hesquiat Project conceived in 1970 by Hesquiat people who were incensed at the vandalism and theft occurring at historic burial sites on the west coast of Vancouver Island. 0-7718-9525-9
