Science writers Shar Levine and Leslie Johnstone were short-listed for the 2009 American Association for the Advancement of Science, Science Book and Films-Subaru Prize for Excellence in Science Books for their book, The Ultimate Guide to Your Microscope (Sterling, 2008). It was the second time the writing team was short-listed for an award in the category of Hands-on Science/Activity Book. Levine and Johnstone were the 2006 winners of the Eve Savory Award for Science Communication from the BC Innovation Council.
It's a common misconception that marine creatures like fish, shrimp and seahorses live silently in the sea. But these water-dwellers actually make "some of the most interesting sounds you've never heard." In What Sound Does a Seahorse Make? (Ronsdale, 2015), readers will learn more about these critters and can scan QR codes to access audio and video recordings of the surprising noises they make. Also included are interactive science projects that illustrate various aspects of sound, such as waves and frequencies.

With 18 titles listed on her www.sciencelady.com website, Shar Levine is one of the province's topselling authors. A go-getter who doesn't enjoy writing, Levine has been a columnist for Business in Vancouver, a 'consumer expert' for VTV and an active member of CWILL, the Children's Writers and Illustrators network in B.C.
Unhappy in her jobs as a personnel manager for the City of Calgary and as a representative for a major B.C. trade union, Shar Levine opened a science store for kids in Vancouver called Einstein's in 1987. At the back of her store she taught hands-on science. When a head honcho of a publishing company came to Einstein's to get her feedback, Levine explained why she could make better science books for kids than those that were on her shelves.
It helps to be a former union negotiator. "Convinced by my bravado,"; she says, the publishing company gave her a contract. She co-authored Projects for a Healthy Planet and Einstein's Science Parties with Sue Grafton, then she developed a lucrative writing partnership with high school teacher Leslie Johnstone. "If you want to be a writer,"; she says, "you don't necessarily have to go to journalism school. What you need is to be bright, articulate and most importantly you need to get to know the right people.";
Levine's three latest titles include a volume about yo-yo tricks, plus Shocking Science: Fun & Fascinating Electrical Experiments (Sterling $29.95), Quick-But-Great Science Fair Projects (Sterling $29.95), both co-written with Leslie Johnstone, who Levine says is one of the most popular instructors at Point Grey High School. "The fact that she is a major babe and an easy marker also contributes to her reputation,"; says Levine.
As the creator of Einstein's, a Mecca for kids who love science, Levine has clearly devised her own theory of relativity. Success is relative to promotion. She was one of several dozen children's writers who participated in the second annual collective launch of new children's books from B.C. on May 8th at the Vancouver Public Library. Vancouverites Shar Levine and Vicki Scudamore were surprised to learn their publisher was calling their new book Chocolate Lover's Cookbook (Sterling $14.95), as several books already bore the same title. If they had to share a title, the authors thought, why not War and Peace? Levine and Scudamore, best known for their science books for kids, cover the science of chocolate as well as recipes, tips and trivia. Accordingly, we learn Chocolate Brownie Fruit Pizza is the most requested dessert by movie stars who stay at Vancouver's Sutton Place Hotel.
