Born on January 22, 1924 in Nakusp, B.C., Copes attended high school in Amsterdam. He served in the Canadian Army and British Military before earning a Ph.D. in economics from the London School of Economics. An Emeritus Professor of Economics at SFU, he was the first recipient of the Sterling Prize for Supporting Controversy from SFU.
