Courage, as Dan Culver knew, is not the absence of fear, but the venturing forth despite the fear. In 1990 he became the fifth Canadian to reach Mt. Everest's summit and in 1993, along with partner Jim Haberl, the first Canadian to summit Pakistan's K2. Sadly, Culver died during the K2 descent. My Little Everest (Sono Nis 2000 $14.95), published posthumously, features a young boy (modeled loosely on Culver's stepson Ryan) who overcomes fear by naming it 'my little Everest."; The Dan Culver Follow Your Dream Foundation encourages and mentors youth leadership and environmental awareness. 1-55039-105-4
