QUICK REFERENCE ENTRY:

Gilly is a term to describe a guide who accompanies and helps an angler to fish. As a high school teacher in Kelowna, Alf Davy edited and co-authored The Gilly: A Flyfisher's Guide to British Columbia (1985) to describe advanced techniques for fly tying, rod building and fly casting. With line drawings by Steve Carter and more than 75 colour photos of B.C. flies by Jim Crawford, The Gilly, with twelve contributors, became one of the bestselling fishing books from B.C., selling more than 50,000 copies before it went out-of-print in 2006. The popularity of The Gilly enabled Sandhill Book Marketing, the province's main outlet for marketing independent titles, to gain access to sales in Smithbooks across the country. Proceeds were allocated to the B.C. Federation of Flyfishers, generating more than $150,000 of accumulated interest for conservation projects. With its eleven printings, The Gilly is an example of why every great book need not be in a league with Alice Munro's short stories. There is a lifetime of learning and sophistication packed into The Gilly, but it will never be cited as a great book unless you love to fish.

There is no shortage of B.C. books on fishing, only a shortage of fish. Experts in print have included Gordon Davies, Robert H. Jones, Art Lingren, Jack Shaw, Province outdoors editor Mike Cramond, entrepreneur Charlie White, conservationist Roderick Haig-Brown, Tyee Club historian Van Gorman Egan, union leader Homer Stevens, New Yorker contributor Edith Iglauer, League of Canadian Poets president D.C. Reid and academic analyst Diane Newell.
