Born in Nelson in 1943, he was involved in the creation of Talonbooks with David Robinson as an outgrowth of Talon magazine. He also co-founded Very Stone House with fellow poets Patrick Lane, bill bissett and Seymour Mayne. During the 1967-1971 period when Talonbooks primarily published poetry, Brown's own poetry titles included If there are any Noahs, Forgetting, O see can u say, West coast seen (edited with David Phillips), Chemical change and Toward a chemistry of reel people. Brown, a musician, also produced three records with Ross Barrett including bill bissett's awake in th red desert in 1968. He then formed Blue Mountain Books to publish his own Northern Light, printed by Intermedia in 1977. He is not to be confused with the aviation buff and author Jim Brown. [See other Jim Brown entry.]
