In 1995, Luke Dalla Bona, an archaeologist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) Cultural Heritage Inventory Protection Program, discovered traces of human occupation in northern Ontario that date back further than previously thought. Radiocarbon dating results recently confirmed that a layer of soil containing fragments of tools and artifacts, from a site near Sioux Lookout, is 8,100 years old. The site of the discovery is located 500 km north of Thunder Bay. It was under ice 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age.
