Born in Leeds, Joan Hardwick discovered the under-rated Victorian writer Violet Hunt while assisting her husband, novelist Keith Alldritt, in researching a book on Ezra Pound. She reveals in An Immodest Violet (M&S 1991) that Hunt died in 1942, neglected and forgotten by her lover Ford Madox Ford after a tempestuous love life. Hardwick spends part of each year in Staffordshire, England.
