Kalevi Holsti was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1935. He came to teach political science at UBC in 1961 and headed the department from 1980 to 1985. His Peace and War: On Conflicts in International Order 1648-1989 studies the often complex origins of international conflicts of the past 340 years and the peace conferences of the same period. As well, he's written Why Nations Realign, about foreign policy restructuring in the postwar world, The Dividing Discipline: Hegemony and Pluralism in International Theory and Taming the Sovereigns: Institutional Change in International Politics (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2004).
