Ian MacAskie's The Long Beaches: A Voyage in Search of the North Pacific Fur Seal (Sono Nis, 1979) recalls his extensive travels as a marine researcher primarily on the Pacific Coast. He was born in Kent, England in 1919 and educated at Douai. After five years in a German P.O.W. camp, he came to Canada in 1948 and joined the B.C. Forest Service. From 1958 to 1978 he was associated with marine mammal research pertaining to the Alaskan fur seal, the Stellar sea lion, sea otters and Killer whales.
