Robert Menzies, an SFU professor, maintains in Survival of the Sanest that abuses of pre-trial assessments are so prevalent in Canada that psychiatric assessments to determine whether a person is fit to stand trial should be abolished. "As presently constituted," he says, "the pre-trial classification work of clinical experts cannot be justified on medical, moral or legal grounds."
