Born on Saltspring Island, Joe Garner's brother Lloyd was a retired bush pilot who had logged 10,000 flights in B.C., the Yukon and the Northwest Territories when he self-published Canadian Bush Pilot (1990) from his home in Eagle Point, Oregon. "Between us, my brothers Tom, Joe, Ollie, and Al, and I were involved with developing Western Canada in one way or another," he wrote, "through construction, roadmaking, logging, sportsfishing and hunting and more. At one time, Tom, Joe and I owned half the floatplanes in British Columbia which included a Cessna 140 on floats as well as other Cessnas--a 170, 180 and 195--all on floats.
