A former Canadian Olympic basketball player and a Vancouver Stock Exchange securities lawyer, Nev Munro self-published a satirical account of stock market culture in the form of a novel, Caveat Emptor (1989). Originally he wrote a non-fiction account of his quarter-century in the market, then opted for satire, following the ups and downs of a financial prodigy named Spiv Whizz Jr.
Born in Vancouver on July 22, 1927, George Neville Munro was the son of a high school principal. At 6-foot-5, he played on the UBC basketball team that won a Canadian championship in 1948 and formed the nucleus of an amateur team that represented Canada at the Olympics in London, finishing ninth of 23 nations. He graduated from UBC Law School and retired from legal practice in 1987 as a senior partner of Munro & Kingsmill. Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at age 60, he battled his illness for 16 years and published a 1994 memoir entitled Exiled to Parkinson's Domain. He died at age 76 in October, 2003.
