Betty Tillotson lives in the tiny Quaker community of Argenta, 100 kilometres north of Nelson, where she edits a magazine on rural living, The Smallholder, founded in 1974. Despite its modest circulation, The Smallholder has surpassed 70 issues. Its informative 'how-to' letters were edited by Tillotson into Skills for Simple Living (Hartley & Marks, 1991). Tillotson's Quaker group mostly came to Argenta from the U.S. in 1959, looking for a better place to raise children.
