"I had searched the sky in the United States for twenty years without seeing a bald eagle." -- Michael Modzelewski

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1953, Modzelewski was inspired by the Robert Redford movie Jeremiah Johnson to explore the Pacific Northwest. At the invitation of a transplanted American named Will Maloff, he lived at Blackfish Sound and wrote an enthusiastic, naive memoir called Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles and Kwakiutl Indians (HarperCollins, 1991). He didn't stay for much longer than a year, leaving "in quest of two distant attractions: sunshine and interactions with the female sex."
