Painting During the Colonial Period in British Columbia, 1845-1871 (Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery, Sono Nis Press, 1979) by Helen Bergen Peters examines drawings and watercolours produced prior to BC's entry into Confederation. These works, by military artists of the time, captured topography, native culture and the portraits of pioneers. Peters analyses how philosophical and aesthetic theories, like the cult of the picturesque, influenced the work of early BC artists.
