After winning the Penny Wise Journalism Scholarship to Langara College in 1988, Lang worked as a reporter for a number of community newspapers. She began researching the material for her book O-Bon in Chimunesu: A Community Remembered (Arsenal Pulp, 1996) as a result of a story she covered while working for the Ladysmith-Chemainus newspaper. The foreword was written by Toyo Takata. Lang has also written for the Vancouver Sun, Georgia Straight, Victoria Times-Colonist, Monday Magazine and Saturday Night magazine. In 1990, she received a Jack Wasserman honourable mention for her article "The silent politics of Debra Sparrow," published in the Georgia Straight (June 23-30, 1989). She has since worked fulltime in the provincial Treaty Negotiations Office.
