Ethel Burnett Tibbits was born in Walters' Falls, Ontario but was taken west as an infant. She attended a rural school in Pomeroy, Manitoba. She received degrees at Alberta College in Edmonton and at Columbia College in New Westminster. She worked on newspapers for three years prior to founding the Marpole-Richmond Review. She wrote the biography of her father, Albert McCarty, who was born in 1864 as the son of Irish immigrants who had arrived in Canada in 1832. His stories were originally published in 1953. The biography that spans Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia was re-published as On To The Sunset: The Lifetime Adventures of a Spirited Pioneer (Fifth House 2002).
