Eric Damer and Caroline Astell, a Professor Emerita of Biochemistry and a former colleauge of Michael Smith, co-authored No Ordinary Mike (Ronsdale Press, 2004), a biography of the UBC researcher who became a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993. [See Michael Smith entry] Born in Victoria in 1964, Damer was raised in Kamloops and studied philosophy at the University of Victoria. He completed his masters and doctoral degrees in educational studies at University of British Columbia. He is also the author of Discovery by Design: The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of British Columbia Origins and History: 1907-2001 (Ronsdale Press, 2002) and UBC The First 100 Years (University of British Columbia, 2009) with Herbert Rosengarten.
