Sometimes known as the father-in-law of wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen, Reid published a memoir, Wild Colonial Boy (D&M, 1995) in which he recounted his life as a soldier, diplomat, ambassador, chairman of the Vancouver Port Corporation, president of Inver Enterprises, board member of Aerospatiale Canada Inc. and countless other boards, and, most notably, Commissioner General for Expo 86. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on November 12, 1924 and came to Quebec in 1955 after 12 years in the British army. He first arrived in Vancouver in 1957. He has innumerable honours including the Order of Canada and a Military Cross.
