An assistant professor of Sociology and Anthropology at UBC, Carole Blackburn wrote The Jesuit Missions and Colonialism in North America, 1632-1650 (McGill-Queens 2004 pb), an examination of relations between Jesuit missionaries and Indians in northeastern North America. She received her Ph.D from Stanford in 2003.

In 2022, Blackburn published Beyond Rights: The Nisg̱a'a Final Agreement and the Challenges of Modern Treaty Relationships (UBC Press), tracing the Nisga'a's journey to achieving a comprehensive modern treaty with Canada. She analyzes treaty making as a way to address historical injustice and to achieve contemporary legal recognition, and explores the possibilities for a distinct Indigenous citizenship in a settler state.
