J. Robert Whittle was a Victoria self-publisher whose historical novels were set in British Columbia, the USA, and England. He died in Central Saanich B.C. on August 17, 2017.

His trilogy, the 'Victoria Chronicles,' is set in Victoria, BC in the early 1900s, incorporating real events and real historical characters.

Whittle grew up in Britain where he was a businessman, a professional cricketer and he gained his degree as a mining engineer in 1951. As a mining engineer he led a first-response to disaster team that worked throughout Europe in the 1950s. He moved to Australia and finally to Canada, working for the Canadian Government in the Baffin Islands, before settling in Victoria, in 1971, where he met his present wife. He began writing while recuperating from staph infection and surgery beginning in 1994. His first novel, Lizzie: Lethal Innocence, about an early 1800s entrepreneur in London, became the basis for a series. With his wife Joyce Sandilands, he has a written "Moonbeam Series" for children aged four to nine. He has sold his books at summer markets in Victoria and Sidney, and at Christmas craft fairs. In 2008 he published his second 'stand-alone' title and ninth novel, 'Race For A Treasure,' co-written with his wife.
