One of eleven siblings, Stanley was born in the village of Gingolz, also known as Kincolith, on the northern coast of B.C. in 1958. His book Northwest Native Arts: Basic Forms (Hancock, 2002) shows how to draw the basic forms of First Nations art in the Pacific Northwest. His father Murphy Stanley Sr. and his brothers Murphy Jr. and Virgil are also artists.
