Born in the prairies in 1923, Thompson came to Victoria in 1947 where he worked for CJVI radio prior to his 28-year career with the provincial government. He took early retirement in 1978. His humourous memoir of boyhood is Penny Candy, Bobskates and Frozen Roadapples (Orca, 1990). He is not to be confused with Godwin Books publisher Robert S. Thomson.
