As a resident of Sooke she wrote a novel about a middle-aged woman who goes to El Salvador to visit her foster child, Madrina, Run! Run, Madrina, Run, Madrina, Run! (Sono Nis, 1986). The protagonist becomes embroiled in nightmarish difficulties that require her escape in shark infested Nicaraguan waters in a stolen fishboat. Born in Canada in 1921, Wingrove spent her childhood in northern California and Britain.
