Renowned Canadian musician Harry Adaskin was born in Riga, Latvia on October 6, 1901. His younger brothers Murray and John became a composer and a radio producer, respectively. He grew up in Toronto, started playing violin at age seven and began the music department at UBC in 1946. He stayed on the faculty until 1973. His memoirs are A Fiddler's World (Vancouver: November House, 1977) and A Fiddler's Choice (Vancouver: November House, 1982).
