Born on February 06, 1947 in Alberta, Patricia Kramer moved to Vancouver in 1971. She worked as a naturalist and speaker on cruise ships and has traveled the world visiting Indigenous Peoples. She has also worked for and with Northwest Coast First Nations in an educational capacity for more than 20 years. In her book Totem Poles (Heritage House 2008) she teaches how totem poles are made, their origin and history, the symbols and ceremonies linked to them, where to see them and how to identify recurring symbols.
