Bart Campbell's essays about the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver and his experiences there as a soup kitchen volunteer were aired on CBC Morningside and appeared in Next City, True Life, Canadian Forum and the Vancouver Review. Spanning a period of three-and-a-half years, his memoir of a skid row drop-in centre in Canada's poorest neighborhood is The Door Is Open: Memoirs of a Soup Kitchen Volunteer (Anvil, 2002). It was shortlisted for a B.C. Book Prize. Campbell was employed as a medical laboratory technologist at the time.
