One of the least-known histories of British Columbia was prompted by a visit to the province by British publisher Sir Stanley Unwin during a tour of Western Canada in 1949. He commissioned a 219-page overview by Fred H. Goodchild entitled British Columbia: Its History, People and Industry (London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd., 1951). The work received a scathing review in 1952 from Willard E. Ireland, editor of the British Columbia Historical Quarterly, on the grounds that it was riddled with errors. Although this work was issued by a major British publishing firm, it seems to have vanished from public view. Even major reference works typically fail to include it.
