The Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko visited Vancouver in 1974 and gave a packed reading at the Vancouver Art Gallery on West Georgia. Editor and publisher Steve Osborne has described the subsequent dinner with Yevtushenko and Vancouver literati at Orestes restaurant in his collection of essays Ice & Fire: Dispatches from the New World, 1988-1998. Yevtushenko was celebrated outside of Russia in the 1960s and 1970s as an emerging new, liberal voice within the Soviet Union.
