Longtime Denman Island resident Winnie Isbister, mother to ten children, wrote a history of the island that was locally published.

Her maternal grandfather arrived in the Comox Valley in 1874 and moved to Denman Island in 1876. Her father then came from Orkney, Scotland, to Denman Island in 1888. Her book was updated but also condensed by James P. Kirk (1918-2014) as My Ain Folk Revisited, Denman Island 1875-2000.

The title My Ain Folk is derived from the traditional Scottish song of the same name written by Wilfred Mills, the pen name of William Alfred Braund. It usually sung when Scots, far from home, are gathered.
