The author of the first full-length Communist history of the province shares the same name as one of British Columbia's most conservative and enduring premiers. William "Old Bill" Bennett (1881-1949) examined the role of trade unionism in his Builders of British Columbia (Vancouver: Broadway Printers, 1937). Bennett ran as a Communist candidate in riding of Vancouver South during the federal election of 1930 and was also the subject of a biography by Tom McEwan entitled He Wrote For Us: The Story of William Bennett, Pioneer Socialist Journalist (Vancouver: Tribune Publishing Company, 1951).
