As a surveyor for the B.C. lands department, Captain R.P. Bishop was selected to find the location of the famous rock upon which Alexander Mackenzie inscribed the words "from Canada by land, 1973." He did so in the summer of 1923 and published a book two years later entitled Mackenzie's Rock: With a Map Showing the Course Followed by the Explorer From Bella Coola, B.C., to the Rock, and Illustrated with Views Along the Route (Ottawa: Dept. of the Interior, 1924?).
