Born in Calgary, Alberta on January 7, 1943, Bill Roberts was raised in British Columbia. An alumnus of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Saskatchewan, Roberts worked for Teck Cominco for 38 years, 36 of those underground as a hardrock miner with a short stint as a shift boss. As a retired miner proud of his occupation and colleagues, he wrote The Best Miners in the World: Stories from Canada's Sullivan Mine (Self-published; Saskatoon: Houghton Boston printers, 2004).
