Adam Thom (1820-1890) was born and educated as a lawyer in Scotland, then he went to Canada where he worked as a teacher, newspaper editor, government commissioner, and magistrate. In his biased treatise he argued in favour of British claims to the Oregon Territory by using "materials furnished by the Americans themselves."
